Klondike Derby
This year's Klondike will be at Camp Arrowhead in Pittsford on January 23. Mr. McCunn is coordinating and guarantees a good time will be had by all especially since this year it looks like we may even have some snow for the sled races. Scout Leader Meeting
The boy leaders have gathered two times for a troop planning session in which the next 4 or 5 weeks of meetings are planned and responsibilities assigned. Hopefully you've seen or heard of the results: more organized and efficient meetings with more boys earning merit badges, learning skills, and gaining leadership experience. Congratulations to the youth leaders for their dedication to making improvements to our troop! (thanks too, to Mr. Kanaley and Mr. Collard for their guidance!) Attached is the schedule for the next several weeks.Back to top
‘Tis the Season’ donations
After announcing at two meetings that boys could donate portions of their 'scout money' to charity, a total of $ 107.44 was graciously donated by several boys. The funds will go, as per the boy's wishes, to needy area families, to the Open Door Mission, or to a Rochester BSA Troop which has been identified as having needs. We are all fortunate to have many blessings and the boys who participated are to be congratulating for demonstrating true scout spirit! They have certainly done a 'good turn daily'.Back to top
Christmas Tree Final Tally
Mr. Dekar reports that 198 Christmas trees were selected, cut, transported, marketed and sold by our troop. Many thanks to all who participated and a special 'atta boy' to Mr. Dekar for making it all come together so well!! We can expect that next year some of the boys will take on more responsibility in organizing the activity.Back to top
Scoutmaster Scribbles
January is the time of year when we reflect on the past year and make plans for improvements, sometimes called 'New Year's Resolutions'. Many times those resolutions fall apart after a couple of weeks ( can I count shoveling the driveway as exercise??) and get lost in our daily activities. In a couple of weeks we'll have a Court of Awards ceremony where many of our boys will be recognized for rank advancement. In many of my Scoutmaster Conferences, boys explain to me that while they may have slacked off in their advancement over certain periods of time, they realized they really did want to continue and make Scouting an important part of their life experience. I'd like to see each of our boys set a personal goal -- a sort of New Year's Resolution-- of reaching the Eagle Scout Award.
One thing that each boy has learned is that it really depends on him. Just like in life, in scouting, rewards don't come to those who wait. You have to take the steps yourself to get the rewards. And once you've taken a few of those steps, the next ones become easier and easier. After all, the Scouting advancement trail is well paved, well traveled and well respected. I hope to see all of the boys in our troop advance a step or two along that trail on February 8th.
