February 2002 Camp-out Sponsored by the Gladiators Patrol

This month's camp-out is scheduled for February 23-24 at Camp Cutler. We'll be camping at the Maxion Tract Field, located at the south end of the park, off of Clements Road. For those that are not confident in their winter camping skills or gear, we have also reserved Maxion Shelter. The shelter sleeps 20 in heated comfort.

We plan to leave the Scout house Saturday morning at 8:15 and arrive at Cummings Nature Center when they open for a morning of snowshoeing! Rentals and lesson are $5 plus a $2 student / $5 adult admission into the park. After a hot lunch at the campsite, plan on some great ice fishing, sledding, hiking, and/or cross-country skiing. BYO Skis or rent from the limited selection at Cutler ($1/hr or $5/day). The evening will bring the usual great Scout cooking, campfire, and crackerbarrel.

Sign-up early to reserve your preferred sleeping spot (tent or shelter). Watch for the sign-up sheets and additional information at the Scout meetings. $2 camping fee is due February 11. Think SNOW!

New Orienteering Equipment

The Quartermaster room has been equipped with new orienteering controls and punches for Troop 10 use. For those new to orienteering, the controls are the three-sided markers with a white and orange triangle on each side. Controls are strategically placed at different locations on an orienteering course and corresponding topographic map for compass skill building and competitive purposes. A punch hangs within each control so competitors can mark (punch) cards as evidence that they found a control. Our punches are series "B" punches, which has a different symbol for each punch. The new orienteering equipment can be signed out through the Troop Quartermaster for both patrol and Troop activities. Mr. Kanaley has topographic maps of Mendon Ponds that may be borrowed for those of interest. Brush up on those compass skills!

CAMP RUSSELL LETS GO SKIING!

To all Scout Skiers and Boarders: Don't let the Spring conditions fool you - there's still snow on the slopes, and this past weekend offered some great Spring skiing. A little early in the ski season, but who could argue with the abundant sunshine on the slopes ! Anyone interested in arranging a ski trip to a local ski center please let Mr. Stewart know. We will likely need a group of at least 20 people to take advantage of group rate discounts on lift tickets, lessons and rentals. This will be an opportunity for beginners to try a new sport and for the experienced to accomplish many Snow Sports merit badge requirements. The more adventurous can practice those twisters, daffys, fakies and 360s to prepare for the Camp Russell trip! A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board for anyone interested. Family members welcome.

TROOP 10’s JLTC

Troop 10's Junior Leader Training Conference is a one day program designed to give current or future youth Leaders of Troop 10 some of the tools they will need in their roles as Patrol Leaders, Troop Guides or Senior Patrol Leaders. The adult Leaders (listed below) involved in preparing and presenting this year's program clearly hope that the information presented on resources, ethics, conflict resolution, key points to leadership, etc. will help the Scouts grow in character and build their confidence thus making them more effective Leaders. The day, however, won't be all work. There will be games, songs, bowling in the afternoon and... pizza! Although our one day program isn't expected to cover or substitute for the week long program provided by Council, it was rated very high by the Scouts that participated two years ago. Since this is a very special activity only Scouts recommended by an adult Leader have been invited to participate.

This year our mini-JLTC will be held at the Scout House on Saturday, February 2 from 7:30 until 5:00. Class A uniform should be worn for
the morning activities. Class B is appropriate for the afternoon.

JLTC 2002 Planning and Training Staff:

K. Beck, G. Bixler, Fred Collard, P. Collard, J. Kanaley, Jimmy Kanaley, G. Keyes, D. Knab, C. Liedtke, D. McCunn, M. Monnat, D. Ogden, F. Russell, S. Schmidt, G. Stewart and B. Williamson. Several additional Senior Scouts are currently being contacted to serve on the Training Staff their participation will be acknowledge next month.

SCOUTMASTER SCRIBBLES

"Martin Luther King may be best known as a communicator and orator. His now famous speech, "I Have A Dream" is to me, a fantastic example of communication and speech. The message is clear and painted in vivid imagery. Mr. King had a dream. A simple dream. One of equality, of brotherhood, of a positive future for the next generations. It is a dream that I want us to wake up to, a dream I want us to have as our reality. Let me know if you want a copy of the words of that speech. Then sit back and 'listen' to the dream, and determine what you can do to help bring that vision to life."
